hello my name is carla peralta i want to start by telling you what a wetland is wetlands describe a variety of areas where plants and animals are especially suited to the wet environments swellings are among the richest and biologically most productive habitats on earth and make up 5.5 percent of the land here in the us today my paper focuses on isolated wetlands and they make up 29 of all wetlands to sum it up that makes around 50 000 square miles of land in the usa and the only difference is that they have with other wetlands is that they have no body of water nearby making them geographically isolated by dry land all right well today i'll be questioning to what extent can the destruction of isolated wetlands cause negative effects on flood water retention micro climate regulation and pollution retention and transformation on the united states our presentation will examine the services that isolated wetlands gives the united states and how behind how the destruction of them through their deregulation uh by the clean water i can tell the one can lead to a magnitude of negative effects to the environment and society i want to i will then finish the presentation by offering some conclusions and some thoughts on current news that affect wetlands today alright well wetland contains large amounts of vegetation and hold many rare and threatened wildlife in around their surroundings due to all that vegetation they can absorb and retain many runoff nutrients like fertilizers that contain carbon nitrogen and especially phosphorus these elements can cause explosions of algae through a process called eutrophication with this explosion of algae there is a loss of sunlight unable to satisfy the needs of all algae causing massive die-offs of them which leads to their eventual decomposition that absorbs oxygen and leads to beta-zone like dead zones that kill any fish or wildlife in the water due to the lack of oxygen since water is moved through aquifers underground the wetland i'm sorry since water is moved through aquifers underground the wetland can be any distance from a body of water and still give their positive benefits to them one of the main benefits of wetlands is to contribute flood water retention which is basically a term used to describe the slowing and capture of storm water flooding is the most common and destructive of all hazards continued urbanization has caused a decrease in wetlands which then causes a reduced ability of storm water retention causing continued damage to homes cities and infrastructure the way wetlands help flooding is that they slowly introduce water through their water table slowing the flow of water introduced into the land but with that decrease in wetlands but with the decreasing wetlands the water table will shift causing it to rise and making flooding even easier as shown by the picture on the right when describing microclimate regulation i will start by describing what evapotranspiration is which is a process that occurs in plants when they take in carbon dioxide and have and to do so need to have their stomata open allowing heat and sunlight to evaporate water within the plant and vaporizing that water into water vapor this process basically helps the environment and society because not only does this process absorb a large amount of heat but it also creates but it also greatly helps the water cycle introducing water vapor into the atmosphere where it will eventually make clouds and rain appear because of this micro micro climate regulations is extremely helpful for cities but wetlands nearly cities are one of the most danger dude um due to urbanization all right all these impacts taken from the cities come together to show the amount of benefits these wetlands have toward the environment and society with the loss of these environments so are the benefits and to do and to conclude i will talk about the current issues with wetlands with the repeal of president obama's water of the united states this has allowed for further deregulation of all wetlands on pollution rules allowing pesticides and large amounts of fertilizers to be dumped in them although these environments can filter out these fertilizers they can only do so much and with the addition of pesticides it may even damage the vegetation that filters these nutrients that need to be regulated and maintained as not only can we lose the benefits of these environments but the diversity of plants and the animals in them too which gives a plethora of other services to the world
