She took her first steps on a dairy farm where animals are expected to do one thing, milk. And when the milk stops flowing, most cows are sent on their final journey. But Helen was lucky. The farmer she lived with had a heart. He knew she was different. He cared for her, spent a lot of time with her, and couldn't accept the thought of parting with her so cruy. He kept her for several years after she stopped bringing in income. All the while looking for a home for her. That's how Helen came to us. We took her into Uncle Neil's home 5 months ago. 5 months that have been the most meaningful and brightest months of our lives. When she arrived, we learned that Helen had spent all of her 19 years in a stable. No pasture, no sun on her back, no friends. Her world was confined to four walls. And despite her shyness, she made it clear right away she wanted more. We created a special place for her. We called it her room. It had soft bedding, a cozy sun shade, and everything else that would make her adjustment soft and gentle. We talked to her gently every day to get her used to our voices. We set up a camera to watch her without disturbing her peace. We put up a solar powered fountain so she could always hear where the water was. We hung windbells all over the pasture so they would ring to tell her the way [Music] home. We also put a large brush by the entrance and Helen loves to rub herself on it. A little treat that has become a ritual for her. Hi, Helen. Gradually, she began to leave her room and spend more and more time in the pasture. She listened to the wind, the music, the birds singing. She began to live. And then there was a real moment of trust. My partner was next to her in the pasture. Helen walked over to him, tilted her head, and began to rub her whole body against him, nuzzling and licking him. It was her way of saying, "I trust. I love. I'm grateful. Tears came to both of us. It was the blind cow's way of saying for the first time in her life, I am happy. Today, Helen has changed beyond recognition. She spends all day outdoors walking around the pastures, meeting other cows, licking them all indiscriminately. Yes, she has this quirk. She literally kisses everyone who comes near her. Her affection is immense. It's as if she wants to make up for all those years of loneliness. She even has a favorite song. It's a Hawaiian version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. We turn it on and Helen lifts her head, freezes, and seems to smile. She stands still, listening to every note, her ears moving in the light breeze and the ringing of the bells.
